MAKING THE
WORK
Photos: David Carr-Smith / Angela Wright
Anglela's work was an extremely simple structure whose richness consisted in its response to changing light, both daylight and night lamps - and its introduction of somewhat indeterminate and unpredictable grid-induced patterns, into a space dominated by the strict geometry of a vast grid-supported window-facade..
1 - THE SITE
The building, designed by BDP (British Design Partnership), is nine stories high and was completed in 2002.
2 - SKETCHES & STUDIO WORK
Studio work consisted of cutting 3000 metres of stainless steel wire into 3m lengths and knotted these into 20 approximately square nets.
3 - ON SITE 1: MEASURING AND TESTING
Measuring the site and testing units of the work. The pictures are in sequence.
During this visit Angela inspected and disentangled the nets and Patrick measured the site and prepared the suspension method.
3 - ON SITE 2: INSTALLING THE WORK
The work was raised in one day. The pictures are in sequence.
Horizontal cables, spanning the width of the entry space, were fixed around the tops of the pillars that supported the stacks of wood-clad pavilions at each of its ends. The 20 wire nets were hung from the cables at approx 20cm intervals by simply looping and twisting their outside wires around them.
4 - THE FINISHED WORK
The completed installation is shown on page-2:
